SINCE WE OPENED THE DOORS OF OUR NEWTOWN BREWERY IN 2012, OUR IMPACT ON OUR PLANET, OUR COMMUNITY, OUR PEOPLE AND OUR MATES HAS BEEN AS IMPORTANT TO US AS THE BEERS WE BREW.

NOW, WE’RE COMMITTING TO CONTINUALLY REVIEWING AND IMPROVING OUR EFFORTS BY JOINING THE B CORP MOVEMENT.

WHAT’S A B CORP?

The B Corp movement involves a global collective of businesses from a range of industries, balancing purpose with profit to meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact. Certification can only be achieved after a thorough audit by the B Corp crew, who look at the impact a business has across FIVE pillars:

Environment, Community, Stakeholders, Workers, Governance.

Required to meet a minimum score across each pillar, B Corp certification ain’t a ‘set and forget’ task. To maintain the certification, businesses must improve on their scores every THREE years; A commitment we’re bloody pumped to take on!

OUR B CORP JOURNEY

Our guiding mission to serve the peoplE has always been fuelled by an urge to use our business as a force for good. As such, we’ve ingrained a bunch of processes, attitudes and initiatives into what we do each day. Here are just a few examples of our efforts to date:

  • In partnership with UTS Science, our algae project is focused on creating a genuine difference for the whole brewing industry and beyond, reducing both carbon emissions during the brewing process AND livestock methane emissions. Our Newtown brewery is powered by 100% renewable energy thanks to our partnership with Pingala Solar, while our spent grain and water recycling programs have seen us cut our brewery waste year-on-year.

  • We make regular contributions to a number of charities including Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Two Good Co. and Groundswell, using events and beer as vessels for fundraising. Our nationwide Best Served Loud music events now include a charity element with a portion of drink and ticket sales going to different causes important to the artists, venues or communities we work with. Furthermore, our annual Brewing Scholarship provides opportunities for female and non-binary individuals interested in pursuing a career in brewing, while our board positions within the Inner West Brewers Association and Independent Brewers Association allow us the opportunity to drive change within our industry.

  • With a number of long-serving staff within YH, we’ve developed a share offer policy and established a staff milestone program rewarding such service. We’ve also introduced an independent and free employee assistance scheme which gives employees a range of online resources, access to a counsellor and other specialists in relation to life, heath, money, relationships, work, family, and mental health.

  • While our business has grown to service multiple states, we continue to maintain a significant volume of customers within 80km of our Newtown Brewery. With a focus on activating our brand to provide value to customers through the platforms of music, beer, charity and more, we aim for co-beneficial partnerships.

  • Not only does our company constitution include B Corp principles at it's core, but we’ve signed up to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact, using them to inform how we behave in relation to human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. As such, we’ve maintained long-standing relationships within our supplier and partner network and preserve direct paths of access to our management team for all employees.

We’re proud to have joined the B Corp community and look forward to contributing our learnings and experiences. We’re stoked with the opportunity to provide pathways for aspiring businesses, learn from the existing members and collectively strive for a better impact. Cheers for getting us here and watch this space for what comes next!
